Haryana to celebrate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi in a big way

The central government has decided to celebrate 150th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi as a global affair. In accordance with this, Haryana government will organise various events to commemorate the Birth Anniversary throughout the state and the celebrations will continue for the next two years.

The events to mark his 150th birth anniversary would begin on October 2 this year and would culminate on October 2, 2020. The Father of the Nation played a key role in Country’s independence and inspired many through his teachings of non-violence. The world observes October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence.


All the Tableaux in Republic Day Parade January 26, 2019 would be based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi in connection with Haryana. A Special Vidhan Sabha Session would be convened in 2019, he added. The spokesperson said that `Pad Yatra’ would be organised involving 150 youth at a time walking 10 kms per day for 150 days covering every village of the state. Similarly, Cycle Yatra would be organised and during these yatras, awareness would be generated on government programmes, drug abuse and Gandhi his teachings.  

Under EK Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative to boost cultural bonds and to enhance interaction between people of various states, five students from each state would stay together for sometime in camps. Short Film Competition and International Conference would be organised on Gandhi . In schools, essay writing, painting and quiz competitions would be organised.

Other events include Swachh Bharat Internship Programme, promotion of Khadi, villages and cottage Industries, declaring 2019 as year of peace, communal harmony and Satyagraha and publicise and promote non-conventional energy resources, screening of films on Gandhi and displaying quotations of Gandhi through Display Panels or Sign Boards on National Highways.  


Several activities would be organized for social and economic uplift of weaker sections, Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes. The other Activities to celebrate the 150th year of Mahatma Gandhi would include restoration of water reservoir in mission mode and water conservation. Awareness would be generated against violence and crime against women and weaker sections.
